The Boy & The Twins

The Boy & The Twins (2010) explores new possibilities of representing nonconforming gender and youth through photographic portraiture. While researching negatives from my childhood for a Wellcome Trust commission in 2009, I found black and white footage of my twin-sister and myself produced in Sweden in the 1980s. From these family albums I created a new narrative that foreground boyishness and doubling. When I met the teenager Jacob, who identifies as a trans guy, he became for me a reminder of my childhood tomboy persona and together our portraits developed into The Boy & The Twins. This nonlinear body of work juxtaposes time, space and gender. Jacob, his boyfriend, my twin-sister, and myself form overlapping narratives of maleness, femaleness, femininity and masculinity, which are continuously reconstructed through juxtaposition and sequencing.
